CHANCES Autism Support

In response to the needs of more than 60 children who have autism or an autism spectrum disorder and their families in both Seneca and Cayuga Counties, Seneca Cayuga ARC developed the Childhood Autism Network of Comprehensive Education & Support - CHANCES.

The program, developed with input from parents, Clinic and Community Service staff, supports families with children ages birth to 18 years who have autism or an autism spectrum disorder. Those services include a parent support group; up to two hours of respite for eligible children during the parent support group (on-site or in home); educational presentations on autism; skills training at home, in school and in the community; as well as both planned and unplanned respite time.

Designed as a team approach to services, parents are the key members and are joined by two well-trained, experienced support personnel and clinicians with expertise in the area of autism. The team approach allows the child and family to build a more personal and trusting relationship with consistent support staff. The team's focus is on sharing information, supporting the incorporation of new skills or approaches and providing safe, productive respite opportunities at home and in the community.

Dr. John Erhart facilitates a parent support group once each month at the Karl D. Warner Clinic in Auburn and once each month in Waterloo.

Financial support for CHANCES is provided through Family Support funds from both Central New York DSO and Finger Lakes DDSO.
